A rough recording of the first song I wrote for my musical based on Marla Taviano's Unbelieve.

Lyrics

Don’t Wanna Go To Your Cool Church - Paul Heatley, April 2022
(Inspired by Marla Taviano’s Unbelieve)

I don't wanna go to your cool church, where it's not cool if you're gay,
For love ought to be celebrated - it's not a thing to pray away!

I don't wanna go to your cool church where they tell you how to vote
Like the old me would tell you to sit down if you tried to rock the boat

I wanna be the best that I can be, but church brought out the worst in me. x2

I don't wanna go to your cool church with the sexist pastor dude.

When I speak against patriarchy, he won't like my attitude.

Don’t wanna be shamed for my clothing, or because I like a drink.
And I’ll have to skip bible study if they tell you what to think
I wanna be the best that I can be, but church brought out the worst in me. x2

Now my mind’s been set free for new kinds of learning
There’s love within me, a new fire that’s burning.
I don’t wanna be the mean old person that you used to see.
I would read every verse where God honors the lowly,
But thought they were cursed, while my life was holy,
And the way I would judge non-Christians, no wonder they didn’t budge!

And I don’t wanna go to your cool church with the rainbow flag outside;
I don’t need to show up on Sundays to show my new-found love for Pride.
Don’t need to be seen in the Lord’s house – no, I don’t give a damn!
‘Cause now that I’ve found God within me, She’s everywhere I am.
I wanna be the best that I can be, but church brought out the worst in me x3

So I don’t wanna go to your cool church!
